Shanghai Forum 2019 will be held on May 25, 2019.The application for roundtables and sessions officially opens up touniversities, think tanks, governments and enterprises all over the world.
I: About Shanghai Forum
i. Introduction
Shanghai Forum is one of the most influentialinternational forums held in Shanghai, and is exclusively named after Shanghaiat present. Founded in 2005, hosted by Fudan University, the Forum has beensuccessfully held 13 times. With the mission of "concentrating on Asia,focusing on hot issues, congregating elites, promoting interaction, enhancingcooperation and seeking consensus", the Forum focuses on "GlobalGovernance and Asia".
Every May, the Forum holds an annual meeting inShanghai, with nearly 1,000 participants from all over the world. The foruminvites the best brains such as political dignitaries, distinguished scholarsand elites from different circles to deliver keynote speeches on the importantissues in Asia and China. Roundtables and sessions are two parts of the Forum.Roundtables tend to be issue-oriented and applicable, while sessions arerelatively academic.

II: The Application Requirements
i. Applicantsqualification
Applicants should be persons in charge of researchinstitutes, think tanks, enterprises, media or government institutes withsignificant academic or social resources and influence in relevant fields.
ii. ApplicationGuide
1. Duration: The duration of everyroundtable/session is 3.5 hours (i.e. half a day).
2. Topic: The topic of eachroundtable/session should be realistic, valuable, strategic and be able to drawextensive attention of the public and media. It should focus on the generaltheme (Asia Amidst Global Reshuffling: Challenges, Developments, and NewParadigms) while discussing from one of the following specific perspectives:
1)New Tech: Innovation and SocialDevelopment
2)New Order: Global Uncertaintyand the World Restructuring
3)New Dimension: Cyberspace andData Governance
4)New Dynamic: Shanghai towards anExcellent Global City
5)New Era: China in A New Round ofReform and Opening-up
3. Chair: Each roundtable/session will have a chair or twoco-chairs. The applicant could serve as the chair, or alternatively inviteothers to be the chair. According to the requirements of Shanghai Forum OrganizationCommittee, the chairs are responsible for the following tasks:
1) Nominate speakers. After the approval of the organizing committee, thechair will cooperate with the organizing committee to pre-invite the speakers,and then the organizing committee will issue an official invitation letter.
2) Determine the format of the meeting and design agenda
3) Collect papers/abstracts
4) Prepare and participate in Shanghai Forum 2019 Preparation Meeting
5) Submit a policy research report
4. ContactPerson: Contact person should be designated by theapplicant. The contact person is expected to assist the chair and to cooperatewith Shanghai Forum Organizing Committee.
Responsibilities:
1) Assisting the chair with the preparatory work
2) Meeting arrangement and preparation
3) Coordinating among the chair, the organizingcommittee and speakers.
4) Assisting in the preparation of conferencematerials as required by the Organizing Committee
Requirements:
1) Study or work in China, residence in Shanghaipreferred
2) Ability to communicate in both Chinese andEnglish
3) Strong sense of responsibility and strongcoordination ability
5. Speakers: The applicant shall draw up a list of speakers inaccordance with the requirements of the "Application Form of ShanghaiForum 2019 " (Annex 1), and cooperate with the organizing committee topromote the invitation work after being approved.
Composition: Speakers are expected to beinfluential in the relative fields and have the characteristics of diversityand internationalization:
1) Diversity: the institutions to which the guestspeakers belong, including universities, research institutions, think tanks,enterprises, government departments, international organizations or the media, etc.should vary.
2) Internationalization: the nationalities ofspeakers or speakers’ affiliations are expected to be diversified. The numberof speakers outside China accounts for at least 50% of the total.
Number of Speakers: Eachroundtable/session can invite no more than 10 speakers (including the Chair).Of which:
1) No more than 5 from outside China
2) No more than 5 from China (including HongKong, Macao and Taiwan), including 1-2 from Shanghai
iii. Expense: Shanghai Forum has financial rules and will coverthe costs for roundtables/sessions including:
1. Simultaneous interpretation in Chinese and English
2. Venue rental
3. Conference material
4. Accommodation (designated hotel) and meals for speakers during the forum
5. Transportationfee for speakers: The transportation fee includes a round-trip flight ticket(economy class) or high-speed railway ticket between the speaker's location andthe conference venue (Shanghai), but does not include visa fees, taxi fares toand from the airport/train station, etc.
• Flight ticket: The forum only covers theround-trip economy class tickets. Guests can purchase tickets through ticketagent provided by the forum, or purchase tickets themselves. The forum willreimburse them according to the price on the electronic itinerary.
Notes about reimbursement:
1) The reimbursement limit for air tickets in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) is $500 (round trip) |
2) The reimbursement limit for air tickets in Asia is $1000 (round trip) |
3) The ticket reimbursement limit for other regions is $2,000 (round trip) |
• High-speed railway ticket: Speakers need to book their tickets bythemselves. The forum will reimburse them according to the relevant nationalfinancial regulations.
iv. Priority will be given to those who could (Pleaseindicate in the application email):
1. Publish research reports or policy advisoryreports at Shanghai Forum
2. Assist Shanghai Forum in inviting appropriatekeynote speakers for the opening and closing ceremonies, such as nationalpoliticians, academic authorities (such as Nobel Prize winners in economics),renowned business leaders, etc.
3. Cover the costs associated with the roundtable/session;or introduce high-quality cooperation institutions and projects, or to providefinancial support for Shanghai Forum, etc.
4. Interdisciplinary cooperate with internationallyrenowned institutions to host roundtables/sessions
