Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honor to address you today at the Shanghai Forum 2023, some of our insights and thoughts towards a more inclusive globalization: Asia’s Responsibilities, which is the theme of this esteemed gathering on the challenges we face in promoting inclusive globalization for common development and the crucial role of research ties between universities and industry, along with the necessity for greater public understanding of science.
In our interconnected world, where boundaries are increasingly blurred, we are confronted with both immense opportunities and formidable challenges. Globalization has opened doors to unprecedented collaboration and exchange, but it has also underscored the importance of inclusivity and sustainable development.
One of the significant challenges we face is ensuring that the benefits of globalization are shared by all, regardless of socioeconomic status, geographical location, or cultural background. Inclusive globalization means leaving no one behind and providing equal access to opportunities. We must strive for a global landscape where education, innovation, and economic progress are accessible to all individuals and nations.
Universities and industry play a pivotal role in this endeavor. Research ties between universities and industry foster innovation, drive economic growth, and tackle societal challenges. By fostering collaboration, we can bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that cutting-edge research translates into tangible solutions and advancements. This collaboration enables us to address pressing global issues such as climate change, healthcare, and sustainable development in a comprehensive and impactful manner.
Moreover, we cannot overlook the importance of greater public understanding of science. Science is the backbone of progress and development, yet it is often misunderstood or misinterpreted. We must foster a culture that values scientific literacy and promotes evidence-based decision-making. By enhancing public understanding of science, we can overcome misinformation, foster critical thinking, and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
However, we must also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead. Insufficient funding for research, limited access to resources, and a lack of collaboration platforms hinder our progress. Additionally, the digital divide, disparities in educational opportunities, and unequal distribution of resources pose significant obstacles to inclusive globalization. We must confront these challenges head-on and work together to find solutions.
To overcome these obstacles, we must prioritize investment in research and development, establish mechanisms for knowledge-sharing and technology transfer, and foster a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. Governments, universities, industry leaders, and civil society must join forces, leveraging their respective strengths, to promote an ecosystem of innovation and equitable development.
From an Arab state perspective, it is essential to acknowledge the dramatic and profound changes taking place in the global landscape and international systems. Arab states can navigate these changes effectively by adopting the following approaches:
Firstly: To embrace the diversity: The Arab states should recognize that globalization does not entail a single pattern or approach. Each Arab state has its unique cultural, economic, and social characteristics. Embracing diversity means celebrating and leveraging the Arab region's rich cultural heritage, while also being open to global influences and cooperation.
Secondly: To strengthen the regional integration: The Arab states can enhance their resilience and influence on the global stage by fostering regional integration. This includes deepening economic cooperation, promoting intra-Arab trade, and harmonizing policies and regulations. By working together, Arab states can leverage their collective strength and enhance their bargaining power in global negotiations.
Thirdly: To invest in education and Innovation: This will lead to effectively deal with global changes, Arab states should prioritize investments in education, research, and innovation. By nurturing a highly skilled workforce and fostering a culture of innovation, Arab states can adapt to evolving global trends, seize emerging opportunities, and drive sustainable development.
Fourthly: To promote the economic diversification: As you know some of the Arab states traditionally rely on natural resources, such as oil and gas, for their economic growth as the Gulf states, and the other majority rely on their human capital as Egypt and Jordan. However, to mitigate the risks associated with global economic fluctuations, Arab states should focus on economic diversification. This entails developing robust and diverse sectors, such as technology, renewable energy, tourism, and knowledge-based industries.
Fifthly: To enhance the diplomatic engagement: We believe at the AArU that the Arab states should actively engage in diplomatic efforts and multilateral forums to shape global agendas and decision-making processes. By participating in international organizations, engaging in dialogue, participating in such Forum like the Shanghai Forum-2023 and building strategic partnerships, Arab states can amplify their voices and contribute to shaping the global order in a manner that aligns with their interests.
Sixthly: To prioritize the social development: Dear audience you know that that the changes brought about by globalization can lead to social and economic disparities. Arab states should prioritize social development to ensure that the benefits of globalization are inclusive and reach all segments of society. This includes investing in healthcare, education, social protection, and poverty eradication programs.
Seventhly: To preserve the cultural identity: We believe that the Arab states should take pride in their cultural identity and heritage while engaging with the global community. It is crucial to preserve and promote Arab culture, language, traditions, and values in the face of globalization's potential homogenizing effects. This can be achieved through initiatives that celebrate cultural diversity, support the arts, and encourage cultural exchange.
In conclusion, inclusive globalization is not a lofty ideal but an imperative for our collective progress and prosperity. By strengthening research ties between universities and industry and promoting greater public understanding of science, we can harness the potential of globalization to create a more equitable and sustainable future. Let us embrace collaboration, invest in education and research, and empower individuals and nations to thrive in an interconnected world.
In addition, Arab states can effectively deal with the dramatic changes in the global landscape by embracing diversity, strengthening regional integration, investing in education and innovation, promoting economic diversification, enhancing diplomatic engagement, prioritizing social development, and preserving cultural identity. By adopting these approaches, Arab states can navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by globalization while safeguarding their interests and promoting sustainable development.
