Richard C. Bush

Richard C. Bush is a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution and director of
its Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He also holds the Chen-fu and Cecilia
Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies.
Richard Bush earned a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1978, with an
emphasis on political science and China. He worked for the China Council of
The Asia Society from 1977 to 1983. In July 1983 he became a member of the
staff of the Subcommittee on Asian of the House of Representatives, where he
worked on policy issues related to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Indochina,
and Latin America. In January 1993 he moved to the staff of the Committee of
Foreign Affairs. In July 1995, he became National Intelligence Officer for East
Asia and a member of the National Intelligence Council, which prepared analysis
of key issues for senior executive branch officials. In September 1997, he was
named Chairman and Managing Director of the American Institute in Taiwan.
He joined The Brookings Institution in July 2002.
Since coming to Brookings, Richard Bush has had published the following
books: At Cross Purposes: U.S.-Taiwan Relations Since 1942 (2004); Untying
the Knot: Making Peace in the Taiwan Strait (2003); A War Like No Other: The
Truth About China's Challenge to America (2007, with Michael O'Hanlon);
Perils of Proximity: China-Japan Security Relations (2010); Uncharted Strait:
The Future of China-Taiwan Relations (2013); and Hong Kong in the Shadow
of China: Living with the Leviathan (2016).
