Rana Mitter

Deutsche Bank Director of the University China Centre at the University of Oxford

Rana Mitter is Deutsche Bank Director of the University China Centre at
the University of Oxford, where he is Professor of the History and Politics of
Modern China. He is the author of several books, the most recent of which is
China’s War with Japan, 1937-45: The Struggle for Survival (Penguin, 2013:
US title: Forgotten Ally: China’s World War II ). The book won the 2014 RUSI/
Duke of Westminster’s Medal for Military Literature, was named as a 2013
Book of the Year in the Financial Times and the Economist and was named
a 2014 Choice Outstanding Academic Title, as well as one of the 2014 “Most
Valuable Western Books on China” in Oriental Outlook (瞭望东方周刊). It
was published in Chinese under the title 中国，被遗忘的盟友 (2014).
Previous books include Modern China: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford
University Press, 2008, new edition 2016), which has been translated into
seven languages; A Bitter Revolution: China’s struggle with the modern world
(Oxford University Press, 2004), for which the author was named Times
Higher Education Supplement Young Academic Author of the Year 2005; and
The Manchurian Myth: Nationalism, Resistance and Collaboration in Modern
China (University of California Press, 2000).
He has led a major Leverhulme Research Leadership project on the history of
World War II in China, and has published articles in many academic journals
including Modern Asian Studies, Journal of Contemporary History, Modern
China, and The China Quarterly . He was elected a Fellow of the British
Academy in 2015.
Rana Mitter comments regularly on China in media around the world,
including regular columns for the South China Morning Post, and his reviews
and essays have appeared in newspapers including the China Daily, Financial
Times, International New York Times, Guardian, Telegraph, Caijing, and
Outlook (India).
