Qin Dahe

Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Dr. Qin Dahe, born in 1947 in Gansu Province, is a geographer, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a member of the Sciences for the Developing World (ASDW). He is the former Director of the China Meteorological Administration. He has been awarded the Volvo Environment Prize 2013 as the first Chinese laureate.

 

Dr. Qin graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Lanzhou University in 1970 and received his Ph.D. in 1992. He was elected to become member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003 and member of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (ASDW) in 2004. He took office as the Director of the China Meteorological Administration from 2003-2007.He also served as the Director of the National Cryosphere Key Lab and the Director of the National Climate Committee.

 

As a well-known glaciologist and climatologist, Dr. Qin has participated in or led many scientific expeditions to the Antarctic, Arctic, Qinghai-Tibetan plateau and Western China and made innovational achievements. Dr. Qin is also a leader in international organizations and programs. He was the Co-chairman of the first working group of the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and member of the Scientific Steering Group of World Climate Research Program—Climate and Cryosphere (CliC). He served on the scientific committees of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and of the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP), and participated in the planning and implementation of the International Polar Year (IPY).
