Chairman of the Board & CEO, SK Group, Korea
Chey Tae- won currently serves as Chairman of the Board and CEO of SK Group, which has core businesses in energy, telecommunications and trading services – strategically critical industries to Korea. In this role, Chairman Chey oversees and unites the 89 companies that comprise SK Group.
Beginning his career in 1991, he gained global insights and experiences as Managing Director at Yukong Ltd., now known as SK Innovation (previously SK Corp.). He was appointed Chairman of the Board and CEO of SK Group in 1998. With his innovative and dynamic leadership style, Chairman Chey continues to expand the group – which had a consolidated sales revenue of KRW 110 trillion in 2010, and in 2010 was ranked 104th on the Fortune Global 500 list of the world’s largest enterprises.
Chairman Chey was named as one of the “Global Leaders for Tomorrow” at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 1999. He is a member of numerous business and civic organizations, including the World Economic Forum and the Boao Forum. Supporting the broad UN goals of responsible corporate citizenship, Chairman Chey also serves on the United Nations Global Compact Board. As an important member of the Brookings International Advisory Council and the Advisory Board for the Rand CAPP (Center for Asia Pacific Policy), Chairman Chey performs various roles for these organizations as well.
In recent years, Chairman Chey has devoted significant time and energy to increasing Korea’s visibility in the world community and to enhancing its competitiveness in the global economy. In October 2008, he was named President of the Korea Handball Federation. In November 2010, he was appointed to convene the working group on renewable energy at the Seoul G20 Business Summit.
Chairman Chey holds a B.A. in Physics from Korea University and completed a Ph.D.program in Economics at the University of Chicago.
